James Darren

Best Known As...

Star Trek:DS9 fans know Jimmy as the holographic crooner from 1960's Las Vegas, Vic Fontaine. And fans of Irwin Allen's TV sci-fi classic series The Time Tunnel will remember him as Dr. Tony Newman.

Current / Recent Work

Although Jimmy appeared in 1998 and 2002 as a guest panelist on Hollywood Squares, most of his work, lately, is done in the recording studio and on stage at many of his live performances as an extremely talented jazz singer. His recent CD's, "This One's From The Heart" and "Because Of You" are must-haves both for fans of great music and of DS9. Jimmy's sound is reminiscent of Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, but at the same time uniqely his own.

Bio

Born James Ercolani, June 8, 1936 in Philadelphia, the last name "Darren" was inspired by the car of the same name. He was a student of acting coach Stella Adler, and made his name in the 1950s in a series of teenage-themed films.

The 60's saw him portraying Moondoggie opposite Sally Field in the Gidget movies, before moving on to The Time Tunnel as Dr. Tony Newman. He gained fame in the early and mid-'60s as a singer, with several hits to his credit, including "Goodbye Cruel World" and "Her Royal Majesty."

In the 70's Jimmy appeared on Charlie's Angels and spent a lot of time directing.

The 80's saw him returning to TV acting alongside Star Trek's William Shatner on TJ Hooker, but continuing to direct shows like The A-Team, Hunter, and Stingray.

In the 90's he continued to direct with hits such as Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place and Walker: Texas Ranger. But it was an appearance in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as holographic lounge crooner Vic Fontaine that brought Jimmy full-circle to his roots as a singer. His perfomance was such a hit, he was brought back several more times in the role for which he was a natural.

As a point of trivia, Jimmy owns a pair of shoes once owned by Dean Martin, which he wore every time he played Vic on the show. He was also a personal friend of both Dean and Frank Sinatra. He appeared in the 1964 movie For Those Who Think Young along with Frank's daughter, Nancy, and Dean's daughter, Claudia, and is godfather to Nancy's daughter, Angela.
